National Share a Skip Week has hit the press across the nation from The London Borough of Southwark to Wigan in the North West as the impact of illegal fly-tipping hits home as the economy continues to wobble.

You can read more here and here

While the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) shows a reduction in fly tipping this year, this was only £1m less from the clean up bill last year of £72.7m, fly-tipping remains still, a significant financial, social and environmental problem.

Defra’s data portrays the official cost for the local council, it fails however to report the major problem of fly-tipping on private land. Statistics show this is another estimated annual cost of £50m. This cost is picked up by the individual landowners, forced to dispose of other peoples waste.

It falls to the local councils to ensure this problem is dealt with effectively. National Share a Skip Week aims to lighten the load, and reduce fly tipping costs, through the sharing of a skip.

Fly-tipping incidents reported on the Flycapture database by Local Authorities in 2007-2008. Data collated by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Liverpool tops the table with more than double the clean up costs of 2nd place Wansworth.

Where do you rank?
